Section of a torc of three hollow tubes
Ancient Metalworking Techniques
Research by Brian Clarke
While in Madrid some years ago with Michael Good, to make a presentation at an International Symposium on Ancient Goldworking Techniques, we spotted some fragments of Hollow and Twisted Tube Torcs, in an exhibition of Torcs at the National Archeological Museum. This immediately made us ask the question, "How were they made". We discussed the possibilities of how they were made. Not being there for long enough to do proper research, we did not find out how they were made in antiquity, but decided they could be made by Anticlastic Raising. Following are images of my experiments I carried out when I got home.
